HEMP – High-Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse Facilities

HEMP facilities are specifically constructed to protect computer systems and radar systems from interference and destruction through the disbursement of electrical pulses through the atmosphere. Primarily used to prevent or intercept incoming missiles, these facilities are vital elements in the preservation of United States critical infrastructure and missile defense capabilities in the face of nuclear attack. HEMP can easily span an area the size of a continent, and this radiation can affect systems on land, under sea, and in the air. A large device detonated over Kansas would affect the entire continental United States. HEMP can pose a serious threat to systems when even a single high-altitude nuclear explosion occurs.
