Radiation Shielding
Radiation shielding is shielding used to protect technicians and others nearby from radiation emitting equipment such as X-Ray and CT machines. To accomplish this, specialized construction materials are used. They include lead lined doors, lead lined drywall (otherwise known as lead lined sheetrock or lead lined gypsum wallboard) and lead lined plywood, leaded x-ray glass and acrylic.
Lead and some of its alloys are generally the most cost effective radiation shielding materials to protect against the effects of gamma rays and x-rays. The properties of lead shielding which make it an excellent shielding material are its density, high atomic number, high level of stability, ease of fabrication, high degree of flexibility in application, and its availability.
