TEMPEST
There are three primary construction techniques used to prevent physical intrusion and/or Transient Electromagnetic Pulse Surveillance Technology (TEMPEST) attack in secure facilities: steel enclosures, copper enclosures, and foil enclosures. These techniques are necessary to prevent the interception of compromising emanations, which may unintentionally provide intelligence and classified information to unintended sources.
When computers and communications equipment release signals into the atmosphere, TEMPEST equipment can essentially remotely mirror the activity of the devices, thereby potentially offering intelligence information to parties outside the facility. The proper installation of secure facilities interferes with this monitoring and prevents the loss of critical intelligence information. Each of the three (3) types of enclosures has different situations where its usage is appropriate.
